The Beginning
Fairmont Copley Plaza was built on the original site of the Museum of Fine Arts, which was in Copley Square from 1876 until 1909 when the museum moved into its existing building on Huntington Avenue. Dozens of horse-drawn carts took the museum’s collection of thousands of pieces of art approximately one mile down the street to the new museum.
Long regarded as a Boston institution, The Copley Plaza was formally opened on August 19, 1912, about 16 months after construction of the building began. Mayor of Boston John F. “Honey Fitz” Fitzgerald, President John F. Kennedy’s grandfather, presided over a reception for more than 1,000 guests, including local and national dignitaries, civic leaders, captains of industry, and stage and movie stars. So prestigious was The Copley Plaza’s opening that rooms had been booked 16 months in advance.
The Fairmont Copley Plaza is recognized as an innovator in the hotel industry. The hotel is known for these industry firsts: the first completely air-conditioned hotel in Boston, the first hotel with an international reservations system, the first hotel anywhere to accept credit cards, and the first to offer direct telephone dialing for guests.
During Prohibition, the Oak Bar was known as the Merry-Go-Round Bar, a lively gathering place. Patrons celebrated the end of Prohibition in 1933 at The Copley Plaza's famous Merry-Go-Round Bar, which featured a working merry-go-round. It remained a popular gathering place through the 1970s. Pieces of the Merry-Go-Round Track have been preserved in the floor of OAK Long Bar + Kitchen.
"The opening presented to Boston one of the most colorful and brilliant pictures the city has ever seen. It marked a new era in hotel-keeping, not only in Boston but in the entire country."
As one newspaper noted
During World War II, elevator operators had to be at least 65 years of age, releasing younger workers for war production activities.

We have stayed with you in the past. Several things were no up to par: 1. There was no turn down service 2. instead of giving us the coupons for free drinks when we checked in they were under our door when we got up in the morning 3. No extra towels or extra waters were dropped off 4. Days after we left we kept on getting texts about check out which finally stopped when I called the hotel
My train out of Boston was cancelled so I needed to S. in the city for one night. I’ve stayed at the Fairmont previously several times without issue. Upon arrival, after booking a room with a queen bed, I was told that all they had left was a handicapped room with two double beds. It was on the 4th floor in their “Gold” section, but instead of offering me access to the lounge on that floor after they unilaterally were unable to fulfill my reservation, I was told I could pay another $75 for access. I declined. The room was fine (because it is a handicapped room, the shower was lower — it also had poor water pressure and leaked) but after exiting the first time, the key to the door would not work. I went to reception for them to fix. I went to dinner, came back, and the key did not work again. I had to go to reception a second time for a fix. After heading to the Oak Room for a glass of wine before bed, I went up to go to sleep and for a third time, the key did not work. Someone was sent up with me (as though it was user error) but as I explained to them, it worked after each time I came down to reception because it was being reset. I was told it was probably a battery and was asked if I minded if someone came to look during the night (being warned about the noise it would make). Nobody ever came, but I was glad since I did not think sending someone that late was acceptable. The front desk staff were really polite and mostly apologetic, and I was told they would give me a “credit”, but I did not see one on the account. This was a disappointing S..
So convenient having breakfast, cocktail hour and relaxing in the Gold level lounge. The concierges Oliver and Kevin were amazingly attentive from the beginning to the end of my 5-day stay! The housekeeping is impeccable too. I was cared for :)
I had an amazing experience staying at the Fairmont
Justin was extremely good at the reception when we checked in
The Fairmont is perfectly situated near everything: conference venues, restaurants, shops, subway, Amtrak, airport bus stop etc. Staffs were friendly and helpful with all service requests. The only downside is that the hotel is quite old, so you may run into issues like the keycards not working or the room door being hard to open / close. The gym on the top floor is okay. There are plenty of cardio machines (treadmill, bikes, stairmaster, RowErg) and weight machines + free weights and benches. However, space is somewhat limited, so if you just want to stretch or workout on a yoga mat, you may end up blocking the walkway.
Lovely room, friendly staff, great restaurant
Stayed at the Fairmont Copley with family. Hotel was centrally located for sightseeing, restaurants Withings walking distance, close to the Boston common and freedom trail. Enjoyed the stay!
We love the property, but this visit suggested some service differences. When we arrived at 5:15 p.m. on Monday August 7, there was only one person at reception and it took us nearly 20 minutes to check in (this included a very apologetic representative who stepped in to help, but then the key system was not operating correctly). The carpet in our room (254) was damp near the desk and TV. It remained damp for the two days we stayed. We could hear every sound of the apparently inebriated people in the room adjoining ours, their bathroom being on the other side of the wall that our bed abutted. Needless to say, this was somewhat uncomfortable, hearing them yell, use the toilet and (we think) take a bath at midnight. Room service could not seem to get breakfast right. On Tuesday, August 8, we ordered breakfast for 8 a.m. and it came at 7:40. On Wednesday, August 9, we ordered breakfast for 7:45 a.m. and it came at 8:10 a.m. While we usually enjoy the Oak Room (and have for years, even before the renovation), this time the bartender delivered us one drink — we stopped in on a fairly quiet Monday evening at about 9 p.m. — and then never returned to our end of the bar to check on us or any other guest. Eventually, to leave, we had to ask another guest to borrow a pen because we could not attract him to help us.
For such a high price, I expected a much better experience. The sheets had stains, the drains were clogged, hot and cold labels were incorrect in the shower, and the first day I ordered in-room breakfast dining they failed to take my order and there was no breakfast ready for me in the morning, which messed up my plans. I paid luxury hotel price and got a 1-star motel service.
